Chris
It was me who mentioned the Honda CL400. In many ways it's much like the CCM SR40 although slightly less rudimentary, slightly heavier and at 29hp considerably less powerful. I'm not certain it's THE adventure bike, but for someone who wants something easy to paddle about on, with Honda reliability and the unthreatening looks of the 60's it could be a contender.

Of course really you should be raving about the <a href="http://www.derbi.com/uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=129&Itemid=314" rel="nofollow">Derbi Terra Adventure</a> but maybe 125cc is just a bit too small for you?

Hi Henry, a low height has definitely got something going for it. I get tired of swinging my leg up like a Can Can dancer to get over the saddle of the CRF or the Tenere - and if I'm honest the GS500R too, even once it was lowered. The BMW twin was a breath of fresh air in that respect. I perhaps mistakenly equated the short SR40s with a lack or space and comfort for me, even if they would be urban nippy for sure. I'm still hoping the TR650s will get much more heavily discounted in the next few months. Other than that, someone at the show mentioned the CL/CB400 Jap import. Cool looking retro twin-shocker from around 2000 and with an XR4 engine, but only from used dealers from £2500...

Hi Chris - I wasn't at the HUBB because I was stuck fixing my bike in SE Asia - I had a look at the CCM SR40 and was highly tempted but ended up building a Metisse Triumph instead. I reckon the shorter(in length and height) bikes have a lot going for them - easier to lift into a longtail boat, easier to generally manhandle around and if you're not very good off-road being able to get some power through your legs is handy!! There definitely seems to be a big gap between bikes with 14 inches of travel and 'road bikes'. After the test ride I'm on now I'm making a physically small bike with a 650 single and about 8 inches travel front and back because I just can't find one....... Unfortunately I don't work for a big manufacturer, so it will be a one-off!

You must have missed the Crosstourer with DCT I brought on Saturday for the day. Truely a wonderful bike to ride. I also spotted an NC700X on one if the exhibitor stands. would be very useful with the lockable tank storage!
